The Right Direction

“Moving in the right direction” seems to be the appropriate phrase to describe the past few days. Peter remains in critical condition and on the ventilator. To be more blunt about it, he’s on life support. I just don’t want it to sound terminal, because he can and will get out of the ICU and walk out of the hospital. He is inching his way in the right direction, but progress is slow going in this recovery.

There are two signs of progress today. The percentage of oxygen in each ventilator breath continues to be reduced, yet Peter’s blood gas levels remain correct. I suppose this means that Peter’s lungs are extracting oxygen more efficiently (as well as discarding carbon dioxide). The other sign of progress is that an x-ray of his lungs showed improvement. I heard that his lungs appeared white in the last x-ray, so I assume they have cleared up slightly.

Some family members — me included — returned to Minneapolis today (and I want to thank Jake for getting us all out there in the first place). Some family members remain at the hospital and we’ll try to keep rotating our family into the hospital for as long as it takes. It clearly helped Ty and Erika to have some family with them. They read the comments on the site and take great strength from them, as well. What Peter needs are your prayers. Thanks for all the support and keep it coming until Peter is breathing on his own, until he is alert, and until he has overcome ARDS, and until he has conquered cancer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are happy to hear the tumor prognosis and are positive that Peter will overcome this new challenge. After we saw Peter at the Relay For Life a few weeks ago, Cullen was talking about how he was going to go play hocky with his friend Peter, who was a really good hockey player. It brought a smile to my face and hope it does the same for you. I look forward to that day soon. Try to get some rest if you can.

I hope this finds you all as relaxed and comforted as possible…..

How great to hear about Peter’s weekend progress~ small steps add up to big steps … and big steps add up to leaps & bounds! I bet by this time next weekend Peter will have turned many, many small steps into some giant step towards his recovery!!

I am so happy that you were able to spend these past few days wrapped tight in the loving & supportive arms of your incredible family members… and how great that some still remain! May you continue to find renewed energy and spirit as you soak up their presence…. and we hope that the energy, love and spirit work to aid in Peter’s recovery. The power of prayer is an awesome thing – but there’s nothing better than family in times of need….. how lucky to have both!

It’s the start of a new week — and we hope and pray for more “movement in the right direction” as the week progresses. Thinking of you ALWAYS and wishing more than anything for more great news tomorrow (Monday)!

  20. More prayers coming your way from Rosemount High School to heal this brave young man! Counselors start back to work tomorrow, so the word will get re-passed and many more prayers will be heading to NYC. I cannot imagine how you are all coping yet you seem to have some kind of strength that keeps shining. Denise C.

  22. Just a little note from Minnesota to let you know that we are here praying for Peter and all of you too. We found out about Peter from the Schwan’s man, who I think is your cousin. We have a little guy in our family going through chemo right now too for a Wilm’s tumor. Our hearts go out to all of you, it’s a long road. We will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers daily until Peter is home and healthy.
    Take care!

  23. Peter,

I know you don’t know me. I was a runner on your Grandma Mary’s track team, a long, long time ago!

Anyways, I just want you to know I pray for you. Sometimes at dinner my husband, kids and I pray for you as well.

I heard your lungs have some gunky stuff in them. Well, I want you to know that just this morning I prayed that yukky stuff would go away fast!

From a person who cares about you and your family,

    Suzanne van Dyck (McKay)

  24. Peter and Family,

  25. Good Morning Eigner Clan,

Just wanted you to know we continue to pray for Peter quick recovery from this unforunate turn. I wanted to share with you that I am running my first half marathon on October 21st on Peter’s behalf. I have asked family and friends in the Twin Cities to sponsor me and have shared Peter’s story with them. I have raised over $2000.00 so far for Peter and his benefit fund alone. I will not stop there. Every training run I take, I take for Peter. When I tire, I think of him and you and Ty in NYC and I am inspired to keep going. His story and your family, your immediate and extended family, has inspired me. Each morning for year I check the website and I just felt so helpless, this is only a small step for Peter, but I will continue to run for him and his benefit. God is hearing all of your prayers and he is in our prayers everyday. We released balloons for him one afternoon and watched them sail away and made a wish for Peter. God Bless all of you!

  26. Good Morning Eigners,
It is always good to hear about each little step Peter is making. Peter and both of you are never off our minds. Praying that this time moves rapidly – that your return home happens as soon as possible.

I believe this is the anniversary week that you received the initial devastating news in 2006. What a year you have had!

As always – you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers.
    Love – Peg and Ron

  27. Eigner Family ~

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. We hope Peter continues to make progress and starts breathing on his own real soon!

  28. Continuing to keep all of you in my prayers. It is amazing just to read about all of your prayer warriors ! Praying for healing for you!

  29. Hi Peter,
We are all praying for your healing. Andrew’s Ohio hockey mite team families are praying for you too! When you get out of the hospital your first school lesson can be a geography lesson on how many states/cities are praying for your recovery. Amazing!!!!

The Lord Himself will fight for you; you have only to keep still.
    Exodus 14:14

  30. We were all shocked and very sad to hear about this downturn in the fight. It all happened so suddenly and we were just waiting to hear the next news of something positive, because we all knew it would be.

Thank you to the brave people that keep writing and keeping us informed. YOU know who you are!!! It can’t be easy.

Now for Peter, Ty and Erika – NEVER GIVE UP. The prayer Warrior’s are in full force in MINNESOTA. The test just keeps getting bigger – but we are way bigger than that Path thing. What is a little ARDS anyway. You are on your way down the mountain again little buddy. One breath at a time.

Peter your pictures of the walk in Brainerd were incredible. You hold the crowd no matter where you are. All I can say is ‘Feel the Love from Minnesota’ Peter – it is coming in droves to New York.

From a quiet friend waiting, watching and praying from Pequot Lakes.

  31. Hello Peter & Family. Keep up the great work Peter and keep up the FIGHT! Blaine, MN is just another community that is praying for you on your journey to beat this. You have so many people rooting for you. Our thoughts will stay with you and your family and you are a great inspiration to ALL!!
Take care and you will be in our prayers.

    The Olingers.

  32. Hang in there Peter. We all know you’re a tough little guy, and you WILL beat this. We continue to keep your whole family in our thoughts and prayers.

  33. We think about you guys all the time and check on Peter’s progress regularly. His battle and your strength serve to give Amy & I a “reality-check” whenever we get too down or upset about the trivial things in life.

When Peter gets well we will see you again at Zorbaz, chow some pizza and discuss hockey scars! Take Care and we will see you soon!

  34. Dear Family,
We Believe…………praying very hard for you all.

    Love,
    Uncle Ed and Aunt roz

  35. Hi Peter and family –

So many of your Grandma Mary’s friends are thinking about you and wearing your miracle bracelets. I was out of town for awhile and may have missed the deadline for getting one of your t-shirts, but I’ll check on that as they seem to depict you so perfectly!

I work year round in a school that must have more fire drills than all of the schools put together. We just had another one – we can count on getting to go outside at least once a day! My husband is a fireman and they have to report to the school even though they know it is probably a false alarm so I get to see him a lot! I’m sure the kids love the chance to take a break from their math homework though!

We check your website all of the time and we love the pictures of your family on there. Keep getting healthier and know that all of your MN friends miss you – Nancy Halter
