ARDS

This Saturday morning, Peter appears the same on the surface, but hopefully there is progress within his body. Even as I was writing yesterday that we don’t know what we’re fighting, the doctor’s were in fact referring to it as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ARDS can be caused by many things and it isn’t known what caused it in Peter’s case. ARDS not a disease itself, but a condition of lung disfunction and critical lung damage.

It could take a while, but the idea is to keep Peter on the ventilator and maintain his vital numbers (oxygen, blood pressure, etc) while his lungs repair themselves. So far Peter seems to be moving in the right direction, but it’s too early to see real progress. They have lowered the oxygen level in the ventilator and Peter’s blood oxygen level has maintained the correct level. That seems like a good sign. His blood pressure was pretty steady yesterday and they haven’t needed additional blood pressure medication.

Our little guy is doing great considering this seriously unfortunate turn. I mentioned that it was hard to see him, and it is, but now I see the same beautiful Peter through the tubes and tape. Minute-by-minute, with each mechanical breath, his lungs will heal themselves.

I always hear that the keys to recovery are a positive attitude and of course lots of prayers from you and everyone. I’ve been reading ALL about you lately and i’m beginning to think you are Superman! You can do anything! And the good news is that you are young and they say that kids always get better faster! Just trust God. Once you’re all better you will be so strong! And keep smiling. It’ll make everyone else smile too. I’m excited to meet you someday. -Gina Wolf

  22. Hi Peter,
We just wanted to write an email to you from our family. We are friends with your dad’s friend that he played hockey with in college (Jeff Wells). My son Joey also has Neurobastoma. He found out when he was (3) years old, and he is (7) years old now. Joey’s mom (Laura) actually just flew into Minneapolis last night for a weekend of shopping with her girlfriends. Joey thought you looked real cool when he saw a picture of you in your hockey helmet and uniform. Joey doesn’t believe me, but I am always telling him how much tougher hockey players are than FOOTBALL PLAYERS! Please don’t tell you dad TY that I said this. I used to love to watch the BG VS. Michigan hockey games (I went to Michigan and played football there. don’t tell your dad that either!). I had many friends that were on the Michigan hockey team. Coach Berenson was a great coach!
We just wanted to let you know that we are thinking of you and your family. I know (and so I have heard) that you are a tough athlete… and tough athletes like you CAN DO ANYTHING! Hang in there and continue to do everything you can to help you get better! Please let your mom and dad know that they can call us anytime. Take care, and God bless.

  23. Hi Peter and all the family,
Just wanted to let you know we are continuosly thinking and praying for you all. We hope Peters lungs respond quick and he can begin his journey to being his busy little self again.
Take care and we send Gods blessing and prayers.
    Love

  24. As the mechanical breaths heal you minute by minute, we continue to pray minute after minute for healing and strength…. I can only imagine how hard it is to see you laying in a mass of tubes and tape…. but, just as Uncle Matt says – underneath it all, you are the same beautiful, precious, Peter that we all know & love. No matter how long it takes for your lungs to repair themselves, we are willing to wait and we are willing to pray and hope as long as needed. You’ll make it buddy…. just keep silently fighting.
Ty & Erika ~ I think of you guys all the time. I just can’t imagine…. Everytime I talk to someone regarding Peter, I break down crying because I just can’t begin to imagine the stress this has taken on you. You are two of the most incredible people in the world (next to your son, of course!). Take comfort in one another and know that we all wish we could be there to take away some of your pain….
    With all our love~
Jen, Ryan, Emily, Lily and Parker
