Labor Day ’06

It’s about 5:00 in the afternoon and we are getting ready to leave Grandma and Grandpa Poopster’s (Hanson’s) house in Crosslake. We’ve been here for a few hours and we went for a boat ride, had lunch and fished off the dock. Peter is still feeling great and showing no side effects of the chemo. We have become hand-washing fanatics and we’re going to “re-introduce” Ellie into the mix today. Kate still has a bit of a cold so Grandma will keep her here a few more days.
While it’s absolutely beautiful today, I must say it doesn’t feel like a “normal” Labor Day. I can’t help but to think that Peter would be starting his second year of Preschool in a week or so, but that won’t be the case this year. He understands that he won’t be able to go and he seems OK with that. He was also going to play soccer this fall but told me the other day: “My team will have to get another player since i’m sick, but my team is still going to win. Abbey (Pohlkamp) won’t let me down, Mom!!” He understands more than I ever dreamed he would about what is going on.
We are getting into a new routine, or “normal”, as they say! It involves lots of meds, flushing his Hickman daily, charting everything he does. With that, everything seems to take a little longer, but that’s OK. We are very happy to have an energetic boy for now, and one of his sisters coming home today – he is so excited about that! Thanks for your continued support, comments, call, emails, etc. We can’t thank you enough.

  10. Hey Peter,
As usual I check the web site to see how you are doing. Glad to hear you are feeling well and are out and about. What a beautiful Labor day weekend. Sad but true we took in our dock at the lake and moved back into town. I bet you are so excited to have your sister home. Just in case your Mom lets you play on the computer I am sending you a cool web site that has lots of fun pre-school games for guys like you! Maybe she will check it out for you. Stay strong and eat lots, drink lots, and rest lots.
    Pam

    Erica,
This is the web site: http://riverside.brainerd.k12.mn.us
It is Riverside Elementary’s web site. When you get there click on ikeepbookmarks. Mr. Hunter created this with tons of games for the kids to use at school as well as at home! Hope Peter likes them.

  11. Hi Peter,
We’re so glad you’re home for awhile and having fun with your sisters.
We read about you & Mom & Dad every day and pray each night that you get well soon. We wish we lived closer so that we could visit you oftener, but we hope to drive up your way soon.
Do you remember when Uncle Dale came to stay at your house with Gramma Mary and they took you to get your very first ice cream cone? You didn’t know how to eat it and so you took the ice cream out of the cone with one hand and ate the cone first. By the time you got home, you & your car seat and the back seat of the car were all covered with ice cream. Ellie was too little for ice cream, but she still had some on her. When we come to visit you, maybe we can go to get some again. This time we might have to teach Baby Kate how to eat it.
    Stay strong little man!

    Ty & Erika,
You’re contantly in our thoughts & prayers. We’re thankful that we can check in on Peter’s progress each day. Peter is such a special boy that maybe he was allowed to go through this awful ordeal to teach all of us a lesson in love and faith and patience. Just think of all the people that have been brought together through his story. And the two of you are such special parents to be able to stay strong through it all. I’m sure that there will be a happy ending to it, someday.
    Love to all of you,
    Uncle Dale & Aunt Joanie

  12. Hi Peter and Family,
We’re so happy that things are getting to be “normal” for you. Peter, we think of you everyday and hope that you will continue to feel better. We know that your sisters are happy to have you home again too. Keep up the great work Pete……you are such a strong guy.
    Love,
    Uncle Ed and Aunt roz

  13. WOW! What a great way to spend Labor Day. A boat ride? That’s what I wanted to do, but we had to stay home because my husband had to work. Yuck.
To Mom and Dad: the line care and such will become so commonplace in the next few months that you’ll start forgetting to notice it; it will just become routine. Eden even got to the point with saline and heparin fulshes that we would hook the syringes to her line and she would flush them. She still thinks that the flushes are great fun. It makes her feel like a big girl. We did this early on at her suggetion to help her feel a little control in her day to day care.
I’m so glad that you’re home and feeling good, Peter. Don’t worry too much about being a little more tired: that just means that your body is working HARD to get rid of the cancer. Woo Hoo, keep up the great work!

All of our love from Ohio!

  14. Hello Peter & greetings to all of the Eigners-
It makes me smile when I read that you are doing “normal” big boy things with your family! What fun the boat ride, fishing and lunch must have been yesterday! It certainly was a beautiful day! Unfortunately, I spent the day in the car and in stores… we went shopping in St. Cloud to get Emily-Clare some last minute back-to-school clothes. (A girl can never have too many clothes, ya know!) I am so happy that you are finding ways to have fun while your body is working so hard to battle the bad guys! You must really be a strong, tough little guy in order to fight cancer and go fishing at the same time!! WOW!!
I got more smiles when I learned that Ellie gets to come home and be with you guys now! I bet you’ll all like having that sweet face around again to brighten your faces. One day soon, Kate will get back home too and then you can all snuggle together and squish Peter’s cancer right out of him!
Emily-Clare went off to her first day of 1st grade today. She was a bit apprehensive, but I think she’ll do just fine. She has classmates from Kindergarten in her 1st grade class so she was excited to see them again. Maybe next year when you are strong and healthy again, you can go back to school, Pete! That will be so fun!
I still hope to get a chance to see you soon, bud! Do you know how many days it has been since I last saw that handsome face of yours?? I think it has been 19 days! That’s far too long! You tell mommy to call me as soon as it is safe for me to visit! I miss you….
You have a GREAT day today! Looks like another beautiful one!
We continue to send our prayers high up to the heavens….
    Love you forever, Peter-
    Jenni

  15. Good morning Eigner family,

I checked Peter’s Page before I came to work – it is so good to have it, to be able to follow your progress. You are all constantly on our minds! What a beautiful weekend it was for you to be able to be at home! Peter, how fun that you got to get outside and have fun in the sun! We hope you continue to feel good and keep getting stronger every day. You need to be tougher than those bad guys and show them who is the boss around here!! And I bet Ellie Mae is so excited to get to come home and play with you!!

Ty and Erika – hope the next couple weeks stay uneventful for you – so to speak! Wow, one never knows how fast the daily routine in our lives can change. As always, if there is anything we could do, we’re here.

    Peg and Ron Allord

  16. Hi Pete.

Just want you to know that my family and I continue to pray for you daily. To make it really fun we often form into a huddle. We get together; put our hands in the middle and chant, “1-2-3… Go Team Peter!!!” Then my sisters dance and scream all crazy-like. I don’t do that part because I think it’s kinda dorky, but I love the team huddle part.

Anyway, I’m hoping to get my hands on a Warriors jersey… if I do, will you sign it for me? I think that’d be neat. In the meantime, take good care of yourself and I’ll continue my prayers for you.

    Your friend,
    Ty Ballinger

  17. Hello Eigners,

That is great that you are back home for a couple of weeks.

  29. It was a beautiful Labor Day! I’m so glad you were able to be home for it, and have some fun. And finally your family is able to be together again.

I wonder if Peter’s friend Abbey is a daughter of my son’s football coach? Last name is the same. What a sweetheart, he is so understanding of everything that is going on with him right now.

Well, I just wanted to check in and see how you all were doing.

Oh, I bet Peter just got a kick out of the sign that was put up at the hockey arena for him, that’s so cool.

    Take care of yourselves,

  31. Ty and Ericka,
Please know there are alot of people praying for you guys in KC. Also keeping a close eye on your family’s battle, which I must say is being excuted with distinguished bravery.

Love the picture of the kids, man they all look so much like Walens.
I keep picturing Peter at Abbey’s party bouncing the golf ball all over the place! Ellie was such an adorable baby, and is now an adorable
little girl. And of course no Kate at the time, but now can tell the adorable gene continues.

May God hold you all in the palm of his hand.

    Regards,
    Molly Majors (Jayne’s sister)
