The End of Round Two

Here are three reasons to be happy and hopeful this Friday.

  1. Three of Peter’s chromosomes were examined for certain abnormalities, but none were found. This is a good sign. We really don’t know exactly how good, given that he still has the “unfavorable histology”, but at least this one thing is favorable. I apologize for the lack of medical depth in that tidbit!
  2. Yesterday the doctor was feeling Peter’s abdomen to get a sense of the tumor’s condition. After pushing firmly and thoroughly, the doctor reported that she couldn’t really feel the tumor at all. The doctor had given this same examination before and after surgery and could easily identify the tumor. Furthermore, the doctors are careful about managing expectations, so Ty and Erika are not used to hearing positive news without a disclaimer. To make that announcement, the doctor must have confidence that the tumor is shrinking.
  3. Peter is smiling as round two of chemo comes to a close. If it wasn’t for the IV pole and an absence of hair, you might not know Peter is sick. The Eigners should be discharged from the hospital at about 10:00 AM.

  4. Hey, Pete

Here you are @ age four leading one of those fish bowl lives in a real life battle and winning it. You have legions of fans and every one of us are with you, and watching you, for all the right reasons.

When we are born in to this world we are all guaranteed to go through some tough times, but we usually get a little time to prepare for the challenge. The majority of our challenges are not life theatening; even though they feel like they are. There is nothng in hockey that tests the human mind more than what you are experiencing, Pete. Many times people are victimized by levels of skllls, personality, energy and patience. “They only remember the ones you let in or your shortcomings”.

Like most young people with star potential, your fish bowl life under a microscope defines your mage and redines your substance. You will never have to worry about your image, Pete, because your substance has defined your image forever; totally unlike image gained through perception.

Here you are @ the ripe old age of four (4) with all the ingredients of a “major leaguer” and peforming @ a major league level against a dreaded disease. This puts you way ahead of a lot of people I’ve seen on the ice as well as many of us observing.

Only those experiencing what you are experiencing are on equal ground.

Keep up the good work my friend. You are about to excite this new legion of fans around you.

    Your ole buddy,

    -gringo-

  5. Peter and family!!!

    Have a great weeked!

  6. Peter-
Oops, you did it again! You made me smile, get goose bumps and cry happy tears all at the same time! Do you know what it does to us when we read all this good news?? You make us soooo proud, young man! It’s been written time & time again about what a brave and courageous young boy you are… but I just can’t help but say it again! The courage & bravery that you continue to show are so awesome. I simply can’t think of a single person who is nearly as brave as you are. You are truly marvelous, Peter! It may be a rainy, gloomy day outside, but it’s certainly a happy and sunny day inside my heart!!
I can’t help but think that the power of all the people who are praying soooo hard for you is working! Certainly the chemo is doing it’s job and the doctor’s intelligence is helping, too…. but I am convinced that the power of God’s healing strenght is what’s working the most. 🙂
We continue to pray for more miracles…. it seems to be working, so we certainly aren’t gonna stop now!!!! We also pray that you remain healthy during the time between rounds 2 & 3. We will ask God to keep you as comfortable as possible and we will ask Him to be with you at the time of your marrow harvest. I will also personally ask Him to make your hair grow back BLUE…. but I can’t make any promises! 🙂
I hope you enjoy your time back at home! Hopefully we will get some more “nice” days so you can ride your bike and play some driveway hockey! If it works, we would enjoy another playdate with you, Ellie and Kate.
Hugs, kisses, love and prayers to all of you!
    With happy thoughts-

Being an ex-teacher, I find it necessary to correct the word “redine” in my last writing to “redefine” I also could defer to an old Native American custom I learned while coaching a number of great Native American athletes in Bemidji. We can, and should, leave a mistake on paper here or there if only to remind us that “no one in life is perfect.”

There are a lot of thoughts that enter my mind as you go through this experience together.

I commend you on creating a new awareness for the word, “family”. Genetic, adopted or parental guardian, the word means “forever” while most all of the glory experiences in sports and schooling are fleeting or a tune up for what is real in life. Now you have a whole new extended family with Pete’s legion of fans.

You have instilled a mental toughness and love for life in Peter and you have done it through love. There is no higher honor for you as parents and those responsible for your upbringing.

Tomorrow night @ 2000 hrs we draw for the winner of the Mario Lemieux jersey @ Shep’s on 6th. We want to thank all of those who took the time to buy a raffle ticket to support your family. Here’s hoping Pete wins it because he has enough people who put his name down.

    Keep up the good fight,

    -ole gringo-

  10. Pete, you are the man!!!! You are sure the man of the hour as we all read the happy news of how strong you are and how great you keep up your spirit while all this is going on. I totally admire you Peter. You show all of us the positive that we all should look for in life and to get rid of the negative. What a powerfull little man you are.
Take care buddy and I will talk to you soon.
Tell mom and dad and your sisters hi for me
    Love and Prayers

  11. Peter –
What a way to end a chemo session!!! (: AND to start a weekend – for EVERYONE who keeps up on your progress!! You are one inspirational, strong, brave tough little guy!! Keep it up Peter – there’s only one option for this ending!! I sure hope you win that jersey tomorrow; we’ll keep our fingers crossed! Do you get to go to the benefit dinner tonight? I bet if you do, it’ll be lots of fun to see everyone. We can’t make it, but as always, you’ll be in our thoughts and hearts. Have fun being home again! We sure hope you continue to feel OK. Tell Mommy and Daddy hello for us.

    Love,
    Papa and Monga

  12. Peter and Fam,

We are so glad to hear that you are doing so well and showing the bad guys who’s boss. Keep up the good work kiddo!

  13. Hey Eigner Family, What a roller coaster this is for you all isn’t it? Somehow you never get used to it though. Any good news is huge after all that you have had to hear. I’m sure you feel that each tidbit of positivity from the doctors is like the best chrismas gift you could get. I remember that feeling very clearly. Our prayers won’t stop. Our positive energy is being sent your way and we are offering up our struggles to the Lord on Peter’s behalf.
    Regards,

    Trina Volkl

  14. Hi again, what a nice way to end my day to read the good news. I am sure that this was a great way to end your stay at the hospital. I always look forward to reading your updates. Stay strong and you will all continue to be in my prayers. Cheryl Bailey

  15. Dear Peter and Eigner’s

I am encouraged to hear that you are on a good forcheck against your illness! Keep strong and, “you can accomplish all things through God who strengthens you!” (Phil 4:13)

We have never met but I know your Dad “a little” and your Grandma Mary. I came upon your story in LPH. I am the Girls HS head coach in Bemidji and was at one time a Rosemount hockey youth player like your dad before I moved to Eagan to play in HS.

My older brother Eric who is Ty’s age has a daughter in Rosemount named Isabelle. She was found to have a dangerous genetic disease called Krabbe when she was a young girl. Her disease was different but has many similarities. She was younger than you, and she went through many of the same treatments. Losing her hair, weight and physical abilities. She has worked hard the past two years to gain her strength and speech and still has far to go but she is pressing on and is improving everyday little by little.

We nearly lost Isabelle, but she has become a sign of faith, hope and strength in our whole family and those who know us. We thank God everyday for her.

I will pray for you and your family to be strong and healthy and grow in the Lord!
