Laboring on Labor Day

Today, Labor Day, consisted of a trip to the Bronx Zoo and a barbeque at the Ronald McDonald house. Peter is doing pretty well, but progress remains slow. Ty and Erika try to line up activities that he’ll enjoy and wants to do, but Peter’s participation in the activities is minimal. His physical activity today was to walk down 3/4 of a flight of stairs, since he had to exit the stroller anyway and Mom and Dad encouraged him. His legs were burning before he could get all the way down and he refused to go any farther. At the evening barbeque, other kids were playing right in front of him, but leaving the stroller still didn’t interest him. That is unnatural for most any kid and especially for Peter.

The eating is definitely difficult, but Ty is strict about getting Peter 1400 calories per day. It’s just not optional. Peter is also off the fluid bag, so it’s very important that he’s drinking as well, and he’s doing OK with that. The nausea has been under control and he didn’t get the anti-nausea medication this morning, so the methadone may be taking care of all the withdrawal symptoms. Maybe he’s just about done with the methadone as well.

Tomorrow is a fairly big day at the clinic. They will meet with Dr. LaQuaglia and Dr. Kushner to assess Peter’s status and future. They will hopefully learn when they can book a flight home (this week?) and when they need to book a flight back to NY for additional cancer treatments. I’ll summarize the results of the meetings tomorrow when I know more.

I almost forgot. Erika bought tickets to The Lion King on Broadway. Peter will love that. Hopefully they’ll all love it.

  5. Hi Eigners,
Remember our clock is not necessarily set ot God’s time. He’s never late, He’s always right on time. This is the time to really take one day and even one minute at a time and deal with that. The next day (or minute) will be there when you need it.

Prayers and God’s blessings follow you all!

  6. Hi Peter! Hope you had a great weekend! It sure was hot here in Minnesota! Have you had nice weather in NYC?? We went to the State Fair on Sunday. It was fun – but very hot! Have you ever been there? Emily & Lily went into the Butterfly House…. very cool! Live butterflies were flying everywhere & landing on us…. (one even landed on my butt!) Emily & Lily each bought 2 caterpillars that are supposed to make their cacoons and then turn into butterflies. Lily got a little overly excited with hers — and she “shook them to death” (literally!). We think Emily’s will be OK…. maybe by the time they turn to butterlfies, you’ll be here and you can help us release them!? Silly Lily is waiting to see them turn into “racoons”!! (instead of “cacoons”) Wouldn’t that be something!!!!

We hope you continue to get better & better each day! We sure do think of you ALOT… and we are really getting excited to hear that you are flying home for a nice break before your next treatment!

Emily headed off to 2nd grade today like a brave girl! Pretty soon, you’ll be a big kindergartner!! Won’t that be FUN!!!!

    Love you lots~
Jen, Ryan, Emily, Lily & Parker

  7. Hi Guys – was thinking about you all weekend – hoping that you would get out of jail and that would help somebodies spirits and energy level. One of our prayers was answered and the other seems to be coming later. Very hard to have patience when all you want is to see that light in his eyes. We continue to cheer you all on – the finish line is over that horizon somewhere. I just know it…we all believe it. Keep on keeping on. THE LION KING – WOW!!! Take a nap before you go so you don’t miss a peep.!

  11. Dear Peter,

Your grandma Barb just sent me your web-site with all your journal entires/stories. You are God’s little Trooper!!!

I know we have never met but you certainly are in our prayers. Your Grandma Barb and my Husband Clair Opsal are first cousins. When we lived in Austin, Texas…your Grandma Barb and Grandpa Brian stayed with us for a week. We had a wonderful time together.

You have a special family Peter and I wanted to share with you, that our daughter Charise had cancer when she was younger. Her doctor’s became her friends and team leaders in making her body stronger each day. I heard you like baseball and your doctor’s are pitching homeruns to you each day, and praying that you will run each base with all the strength and energy that you can endure. Your a strong TEAM player. We are proud of you Peter and we will continue to cheer you on each day with our thoughts and prayers.

    Love and Strength, Cyndy Opsal
