Sunday, March 25 – Day +12

It’s 11:00 am and Peter is still sleeping in his bed beside me, even with some bright sun shining in the windows… tired boy! One perk to this is i’ve been able to listen to Acoustic Sunrise for 3 hours! So last night about 10:30 he decided he wanted to try a little OJ (after telling Uncle Matt earlier in the day that he would not be eating or drinking anything until he leaves and goes home)!. I can’t imagine this felt too good on the throat, but that’s what he wanted. He drank a few sips and then went to bed. The diuretic (sp?) meds he’s on might be making him thirsty- who knows.
They still hear wheezing when they listen to him. We know he has pneumonia, but they are taking some extra precautions, which we very much appreciate. They did another nebulizer treatment yesterday but his lungs didn’t sound any better afterward. Another fever last night. He has something going on with his right eye, where it’s a straight solid red line all the way up to his eyeball. I think it’s a blood vessel that burst, which can happen when you combine low platelets with coughing or throwing up, both which he did last night. A little freaky at first sight! It will heal, but not for awhile and they warned us it could get worse before then (meaning the red could end up covering more of the white of his eye). His eyes have been watery and red for a week or more, and I believe that, combined with persistent diarrhea are the reasons they are going to test him for Adenovirus today. They will also be doing one of the more fun procedures – the nasal wash – today, and a throat culture. He coughed quite a bit yesterday but it was much tighter than it’s been. So the combination of these things is causing them to dig a little deeper.
All-in-all, he was much more talkative yesterday which is always good. He watched the Gophers yesterday and thinks it’s pretty cool that his pal Mike Carman scored the game winner. He helped Uncle Troy fill out his Frozen Four bracket the other day and had the Gophers and BC (where another pal Carl plays) winning, so I think he’s in the money! I think i’m going to have to be the bad guy and wake him in a few minutes- they have to get his weight before noon.

  1. We’re glad to hear that he’s hanging in there! We say a prayer each night that the day will come when Peter can come home to Brainerd for good and be done with all of the treatments that are making him feel so badly right now. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and we believe that Peter is nearing the end of the battle and will beat this path thing!!! Peter is in a wonderful facility now, with experts around him who will help him pull through this. God bless you Peter! Keep fighting! The Larson’s

  6. Hi, I just had to say that I am praying for all of you. Ty, we went to high school together, and I heard about Peter back when he was first diagnosed. I check on how he is doing every night after putting my son to bed. It is my reality check of how fragile life is. I know we were never really friends, but I still feel that connection from high school. Please know you have lots of thoughts and prayers out there and from what I have read, Peter is a great fighter. Keep up your strength!

  7. “Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here…”

These words from an old song came to my mind as I read Peter’s News. Keep moving, step by step, toward your goal, Peter!

What a weekend of hockey…………..too bad the Gopher’s couldn’t pull off a win last night huh? We still have the Wild too cheer like crazy for and they are playing really well!! The Warriors have their hockey banquet tonight so hopefully we will see your dad and get the update on how you are feeling today!

  11. Hi Sweet Peter~
Just a quick note to say hello, and to remind you again how much I love you and how very, very proud I am of you! Did you just feel that?? I reached out and hugged you! It’s called a “cyber-hug!” 🙂
After reading your mommy’s informative postings about your recovery & after talking to gramma Barb yesterday, it sounds like you continue to do as well as you can. Gramma Barb said that your counts were beginning to climb & that one of your lungs sounded like it was a bit clearer! Way to go, Peter! Keep reaching towards the light…. push through pain and let our prayers heal you. You are a super, magnificent little fighter! I miss you so much and really, really believe that you’ll be back to play again soon! Keep doing what you’re doing… it’s obviously working!
With much love and continued prayers~

  12. Pete

Back home for a couple of days. Time to catch up on your situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through all this adversity. I receive Bless the Day emails and the one for the 25th reads like this. Bible verse of the day:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” –Proverbs 22:6

I would have to say your potential is unlimited when I look @ how you have fought your way through all this. Your upbringing is as solid as it gets.

My vocabulary is limited, so I also receive a new word of the day with the hope of learning new words. I find it ironic that today’s word is:

    roborant \ROB-uh-ruhnt\, adjective:

    1. Strengthening; restoring vigor.
    2. A strengthening medicine; a tonic; a restorative.

I have to believe all of these emails are a roborant for you and your family. Sure hope so.

    Love ya, Pete

  13. Wow Peter your like the “celebrity ” of Brainerd. You have so many people rooting and praying for you, no wonder your winning the fight. I’m sorry to hear your not feeling the greatest right now, but soon you will be on the upswing and I can’t wait to hear about that. I’m always amazed to read your updates and see how tough you are and how great your spirit is; you, little guy, are quite an inspiration! Keep on hanging in there.

  14. Hello Eigners,
We have been on vacation over spring break, so it’s been great to catch up on Peter’s progress so quickly through this web site – thank you to Uncle Matt, Erika and Ty for being so diligent with the postings!

It sounds like some very difficult times Peter is going through, so I can’t imagine what the families who have it even more trying have had to face. But we’re all glad to hear that he is doing remarkably well, and we will pray for continued healing and lifted spirits!

I have to admit that your family is a big reason we took a family vacation this year. We have talked about taking a family vacation for so many years, but always had some other expense that kept us from doing it – a home improvement project, a daughter’s wedding, a vehicle that needed to be replaced, or whatever. This year we said “we’re going, no matter what”…..life is too short, and there is nothing more important than enjoying time together as a family. We had a great time, counted our blessings, and created memories that will last a lifetime. There is no price to put on that.

I’ve shared this to hopefully convey another example of the inspiration and the impact your family has had on others. You have helped us all look at life a little differently, make decisions a little differently, and appreciate things so much greater. Thank you.

    God bless you all,
Lori and Cary, Luke, Brooke and Erica

  15. Hi Peter
I am glad to hear you are drinking now too! I just started today and it feels really good. I am sorry to hear about your eye, but don’t worry I had a “fish” in my eye. Tell Ellie and Kate thanks for the pretty pictures.
I think my tongue feels too big too, maybe I should get rid of some of mine.
    HAve a good night.
    Mary Virnig

  19. Hi Peter and Family,
Sounds like this phase of the battle is really tough; but Peter is fighting like a true champion! I wish I had the courage and strength that you do Pete!! Our prayers and thoughts are with you guys. Be Well,

  20. Hey, Pete. Today’s word of the day is:

    expunge \ik-SPUNJ\, transitive verb:

    1. To strike out, erase, or mark for deletion; to obliterate; as, “to expunge words, lines, or sentences.”
    2. To wipe out or destroy; to annihilate.

Seem like everything I’ve been reading has a place in your life lately.

I can’t find a word more fitting for your young life, Pete. Every day we hope and pray that you wipe out, destroy and annihilate this dreaded disease and we are confident that will happen.

    Erika and Ty

All we want for this exceptional young man is that he be granted 10,000 joys to expunge all the sorrows that have been his life’s companion since last summer. Tell Pete he is welcome to set up office @ the camp this summer. We will have it all set up.

  21. Hey Peter,
My Name is Susie (Friesen) Rossow and I went to school with your dad. I wanted to let you know my family thinks you are a one strong guy!! You are a fighter and as my son would say you have “Ka-chowed those bad guys”. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
    God Bless,
Susie,Craig, Delaney and Johnny Rossow .

  22. Hi Ty and Erika,
It is May 6 as I write this. I hadn’t read Peter’s web site for a long time & just took time to catch up. I am exhausted and I can’t imagine that you aren’t also. I guess you get some extra steam from a power we cannot understand. And that is good.
I had kept up on Peter’s progress via Jake while we were in CA but of course I did not get the details. When this is over you should write a book. It would be such a help for so many people.
Well just because you haven’t heard from us doesn’t mean we haven’t been thinking of you & saying lots of prayers for all of you including your extended family. Aren’t you lucky to have such wonderful parents to be there for you as well as the rest of your family. God bless all of you.
Hope to see you at the lake sometime this summer.
    Our love, Diane & Tip
